A few legal points to be aware of when hiring a skip are;

1. It is illegal to overload a skip and you will be charged for the hire of a larger skip when the skip is removed. Also it is the customers responsibility to provide a written list of the main materials disposed of in the skip.

2. As stated above if the skip needs to be placed on a public highway, maybe outside your property, then we will need to apply for a skip permit from the local council under section 139 of the 1980 Highways act. A skip permit can be valid from 1 to 28 days, for any period longer than 28 days an additional application will need to be made.

3. Under the Highways regulations we must be able to adhere to the following rules; the skip must not be placed less than 15 metres from a junction. The skip must not obstruct access to premises or a driveway. The skip must be positioned on the road so that the longest edge is parallel to the edge of the road and is as near to the edge of the road as possible.
